I'm not sure why so many people dislike the movie Transformers. The movie was about giant robots (sometimes in disguise) duking it out for the fate of our world. You knew that going in, so what were you expecting -- a life changing experience? Naysayers claim Michael Bay bastardized their precious childhood memories. I say he was the only director for this movie. A classic Michael Bay film features lots of explosions, intense (often over the top) sequences of action, and unnecessary low flying helicopters (this last point brought up by my roommate). Which one of these sounds bad for a Transformers movie? Not only did they have giant robots, the movie had a [probably] much needed human element to it. Robots battling for our survival is great, but having the human characters brings us into the movie -- we can identify with them (kinda), and thus have something to lose should the Autobots be defeated.
The only gripe I had with the movie was that the robots seemed "too busy" in their construction. You couldn't really tell the difference between some of them, especially during action sequences, and made for confused watching. Oh, also flames on Optmius Prime.
Here's me, eagerly awaiting the sequel.
