Over this past weekend we had two games in two days, which is a rarity in our league. The second game was actually the makeup from our "first" game in which no umpires showed up. Coming in with a record of 0-2 on the season, we were aching for a victory. Things did not start well..
In a ridiculous series of events, our team was three hit in the first game. I didn't think such a thing was possible at the level of baseball we play in, but at the end of nine innings we had scratched across three runs on three hits (two of which came in the ninth inning). It was a huge disappointment, considering that we were playing against the worst team in the league last year, the Nuts. However on that Sunday morning they threw strikes, played solid defense, and kept playing add-on little by little, resulting in a final score of 11-3.
I was held hitless for the first time this season, though I did record my first stolen base. And for the second time in as many games, I struck out in the top of the ninth inning with the bases loaded -- I guess I'm not clutch. I played my first innings at first base for the year, and happily managed to snag every ball thrown my way except for one, a wide pickoff throw in which I would have had to go through the baserunner to get. On the flip side I was involved in the first actual pickoff I had seen since I started playing, when my pitcher turned and gunned it perfectly between the baserunner and myself, and the runner didn't want to slide.
The very next night we trotted out to my favorite field in the area, BCC. This was our first home game of the season and we faced the Ravens, who blew us out in game one. We came up with twenty hits in the game (a far cry from the offensive futility of last game), including a walk off base hit in the bottom of the eighth to break a tie and give us our first win of the season -- the game was shortened due to light conditions.
Don't let the tarps and tire fool you, this field is beautiful.
And holy crap, I need a new camera.I got slightly back into form with a triple down the right field line as well as a groundball base hit up the middle. I scored my second run of the game when I stole second and advanced to third on a ball-four wild pitch. The catcher picked up the ball and overthrew the bag at third allowing me to walk in for the score. On the defensive side of the ball, I gunned my first (hopefully of many) baserunner down at the plate when he tried to score from second on a basehit to left field. In a bizarre play the pitcher cut in front of the catcher to grab my throw and apply the tag to the runner, but it resulted in an out so I can't complain.
So, we have our first win under our belt and are hungry for more. We'll get a chance for another one at our:
Next game: Sun. June 28th, 6PM @ Wilburton #1 in Bellevue.
