Bike to Work Month

Some of you may know that May is officially "Bike to Work Month". In the interest of encouraging people to ditch their cars and encourage alternative ways to get to work, my company formed a few teams for the event. I was roped into one with the only requirement being I had to bike to work five times during the month.

I thought I'd be able to get more days in, but with a week to go I've only made three trips. The first I went the entire way to Georgetown and back. The second I rode the entire way there, and then bussed back over I-90 from the Rainier station to the P&R. The third (today) I bussed both ways over the bridge. There's just something about riding across that floating bridge that I don't like -- maybe because you can see the whole thing before you the whole time and it seems endless. Bussing (and finally making use of that ORCA card I bought!) saves me 3 miles of a 10.1 estimated trip from my house to my work, as well as a little time (I haven't had to wait more than five minutes for a bus yet).

The fact that I'm still here able to write is a good thing. Despite the innate danger of sharing the street with cars and large trucks I've only had one near-death experience thus far. The first day riding back was a disaster, as both my legs starting cramping up halfway across the floating bridge -- I sprawled out at the Lid for about twenty minutes after I finally made it. But subsequently I've enjoyed the energy boost I get from riding into work; it's a great way to start the day.

After I picked myself up from the grass.

I think I can tackle two more trips in the remainder of the week, but I'm thinking about keeping with it even after the month ends. I save a little bit of money on gas and associated car fees at the expense of about 45 extra minutes -- bound to go down if I ride faster than my current leisurely pace. And I get to wear high-vis more often, and that's always a plus right?
