Our game last night was held at the beautiful new Steve Cox Memorial Ballpark in White Center. While it had an entirely turf infield (minus mound) which I'm not a total fan of (I prefer dirt in the basepaths or at the very least around the bases), the brand new park was everything I was told it would be: beautiful. The weather was crisp and sunny when we started, and ended with a slightly cool breeze flowing over the field. My team lost 12-8, with our two pitchers combining for 13 walks and the team committing five errors in the field. It was a good game though -- we battled back to tie of the game after being down five runs, and then made a little run in the bottom of the ninth to pick up three more.
The first pitcher was a junkballer, throwing a combination of slow curveball, slow slider, and slow fastball -- and we couldn't get to him. We scored one run in the bottom of the first, but was stymied until the fifth. My first at bat in the 2nd was a routine ground-out to the short stop. I led off the bottom of the fifth, showing bunt at the first pitch to see if it would get the pitcher thinking a little bit -- he was cruising at the time. After filling up the count, I hit a groundball into the hole between short and third, and managed to beat the throw to first for an infield single. Two pitches later, my catcher blasted a shot into left-center field. I went halfway to second, looking to see if the ball would drop: the center fielder was just standing there, and there was no doubt in my mind the ball would get over his head. I sprinted around the bases and scored standing up, as our team picked up four runs that inning to tie the game.
Into the seventh and the Barons had just scored four in the top of the inning. With a new harder throwing pitcher on the mound, I took a first pitch fastball for a strike, and the second pitch was a curveball that was thrown behind me. That at-bat resulted in a solidly hit ball up the middle which the pitcher was able to grab on a bounce, throwing me out. Down seven runs, I started the bottom half of the ninth telling our team that I hoped no one was planning on giving up. The first three batters proceeded to reach on a walk, an error, and a single, loading the bases with no outs. I came up to bat, taking the first pitch high and outside. The second pitch was a fastball right down the middle which for some reason I didn't want to swing at. I guess they figured why not again, and threw another fastball slightly outside the middle, which I served into right field for a solid basehit, picking up two runs. We picked up one more, but the game ended with me stranded on third base.
We got our first loss out of the way, and I doubt we'll issue 13 walks again. Five errors didn't help, and most of the time 8 runs is enough to win a game. We play the Nuts again next week (who we destroyed in week 1) at the U.W. baseball field on Sunday at 9AM -- I encouraged everyone who's around to come on out for it; it's a dream come true to play at my school's ballpark. I'm off to a good start, with almost half as many hits in two games as I had all of last season and also one RBI behind. Let's hope I can continue towards positivity, and my team can get back to winning ways.
