I think it finally hit me a few days ago -- my college days are behind me. As I moved out of Maplewood Apartments on 7th and 43rd (my home for the past three years), I realized that I would no longer be within walking distance to the Ave or make late night runs to the semi-shady-but-not-really taco trailer in the Winchell's parking lot. I wouldn't wake up at 7:30AM in the morning to find two of my apartment-mates still playing poker (and they hadn't started when I went to bed at 11...). No more skipping trips to the IMA, or renting crappy movies from Netflix and inviting unsuspecting friends over to watch. No classes to choose not to go to, or playing video games with friends 'til way too late. Who knows when I would return to the UW? They say finishing college is the beginning of the rest of your life.
Moving has been extremely time consuming -- it's amazing the amount of stuff one can amass in three years. The stuff from my apartment took up half of my room here at my parent's house, as well as all of the living room. Lots of this stuff ended up being tossed though, as I riffled through all the crap and designated boxes for garbage -- why the hell had I held on to my notes from Physics 114?
I finally got internet in my room last night, via a USB wireless network stick ($10 on sale at Fry's!). The lack of updates wasn't just because I was lazy -- moving took a lot of work, and meant I was without internet for a while. Since I was also able to get most of my unpacking done, settling back into my parent's house was mostly complete. I still have some piles of stuff laying around here or there, but I'll get to it eventually. The bookshelves are built, desk complete, bed up and running, and the closet is looking oh so organized. However, it is damn cold here -- I'm literally wearing my large bulky winter jacket to try and remain lukewarm. I put it on when I wake up, take it off when I go to work, put it on when I get back from work, and take it off when I go to sleep. My first night back here I found a thermometer in my room (I had never seen it before) which currently reads 68°. My theory is that it is a fake thermometer my parents fashioned to try and convince me this house isn't as cold as I claim.
While I'm surely giving up some of my freedom by moving back home, there are a host of benefits. I have access to a car, a much larger room, food mostly always available, and most importantly I won't be responsible for rent or electricity or cable/tv/internet. We'll see how long I last here, but if all goes according to plan I will get the job at the city that I applied (and got interviewed) for, and will be on my way to saving up to buy a quaint place of my own in Tukwilla or Renton or Kent.
I got off work today and almost walked out with my coworker to the old bus stop that would have taken me back to UW -- whisked away on a 76, 79, 316, or 355, but I caught myself just in time -- my place was on the 202 back to the place of my childhood; where it all began.
