Coming Attractions

After watching Quantum of Solace last Friday, I realized that I couldn't think of any movies that that were coming out in the near future that I want to see; no Christmas release blockbuster to tent pole the holiday movie season. The best part about this is that I get to save some money by not going to the overpriced cinema. But looking past that I thought I would share with you my three most anticipated movies of 2009.

#3 Watchmen March 6
Watchmen is not your typical superhero movie. Based on a graphic novel that came out in the mid '80s, it was a landmark achievement because while it was a superhero book, it was gritty with lots of adult and dark themes; it was a trend setter when the norm was men and women in tights fighting similarly dressed supervillians. The intent of director Zach Snyder (300) was to keep the look of the movie as close to each frame of the graphic novel as closely as he could; the result looks pretty darn good. This is the new trailer for the Watchmen movie that was attached to Quantum of Solace.

#2 Star Trek May 8
Also attached to QoS was the trailer for the upcoming Star Trek prequel/reboot/re-imagining. Having been a fan of Star Trek since I was fairly young, I felt the franchise as a whole got less and less interesting; after Star Trek: The Next Generation on TV and Star Trek: First Contact in film (over 12 years ago). Instead of continuing the trend of forcing out a continuation to the same old thing, Paramount went outside the box and brought in J.J. Abrams (of Lost, Alias, and Cloverfield fame) to see what magic he could inject into the staling Star Trek name. The new movie is about the original series crew but takes place before the original series. The thing that set Star Trek apart from all other sci-fi franchises was that at it's core, the message was that of optimism -- that humans have the capacity to join together and better themselves. Whether this new movie adopts that or is a straight sci-fi/action remains to be seen. Judging from the trailer, it looks like it's going to be an expansive and action packed movie, hopefully able to reintroduce people back to Star Trek -- or at the very least, bring Spock ears back into style.

#1 Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen June 26
To complete the nerd-alert trifecta, the sequel to last year's summer blockbuster is my most anticipated movie of next year. Say what you will about Michael Bay bastardizing your childhood memories -- I thought Transformers was one of the most enjoyable movies I've ever seen. The sequel promises to be bigger and better, and I'll be there at an opening day matinee ready to take it all in.

Honorable Mentions
Friday the 13th February 13
While I may not see this in theaters, the reboot (yes, another reboot) of this slasher film will hopefully hearken back to the days of yesteryear with campy antics around Camp Crystal Lake. The reboots of Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Halloween were enjoyable, so hopefully this will not disappoint either.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine May 1
Never the biggest X-Men fan and still with a bad taste in my mouth from X-Men: The Last Stand, there may be hope yet on the Wolverine origin movie. Promising to incorporate other X-Men characters not seen in the original three movies and revolving around the most popular X-Man, this could be a surprise hit. Whether I plop money down to see it in theaters though will be a game time decision.

Dishonorable Mention
Pink Panther 2 Doesn't Matter When
We watched Steve Martin's Pink Panther with our friend Brian, whom procured the movie because he loves Beyoncé. What a mistake. Pink Panther is one of the worst movies I have ever seen. It is a movie so unbearable that it astounds me that they would green-light a sequel. But alas, Steve Martin is back to reprise the role of Inspector Jacques Clouseau. Thankfully this time there is no friendship tying me to watch this movie so I can surely and easily stay far far away.

  1. Wow. Not only did you guys "procure" Pink Panther for me, but I specifically warned of the likely disaster that did end up befalling us and recommended that no one join me for said impending disappointment. Glad that was memorable for you.

  2. yeah, I wanted to ignore that part where it would be revealed that we sewed the seeds for our own destruction and lay blame squarely on you. but alas, it seems I am revealed... though i'm sure as hell dragging Thomas down with me!
